Joyce Goodman, Visualising girls’ secondary education in interwar Europe:  Amélie Arató’s L’Enseignement Secondaire Des Jeunes Filles en Europe (Brussels, 1934), in The Rise of Quantitative Data in Education, edited by Martin Lawn (Symposium Books, 2013)

Amélie Arató’ was commissioned by the International Federation of University Women to spend two years travelling in Europe and the USA to collect information on girls’ secondary education and the position of women in education. In the course of her research, she visited England, when she stayed at Crosby Hall. The chapter looks at ways in which Arató’used visual representations of education systems and educational data in her comparative project that aimed to progress education for women and girls in interwar Europe. She published the results of her research as L’Enseignement Secondaire Des Jeunes Filles en Europe in 1934.

International Citizenship and the International Federation of University Women before 1939, History of Education issue 6, 701-721
This article explores discursive languages through which leading women in the International Federation of University Women (IFUW) articulated their understandings of world citizenship and looks at what Caroline Spurgeon, the first President of the IFUW, called the ‘organised training of women to be citizens of the world’. The central section focuses on how the IFUW dealt with aspirations of national minorities in relation to dominant IFUW understandings of borders, territories and frontiers. The final sections focus on notions of scientific internationalism as they played out in the IFUW’s campaign around the nationality of married women and circulated in the League of Nations. The postscript comments briefly on historical approaches to researching the complexities of the IFUW’s engagement in national, international and transnational arenas.

Girls’ Secondary Education in the Western World: From the 18th to the 20th Century, Edited by James C. Albisetti, Joyce Goodman, and Rebecca Rogers (Palgrave/Macmillan, 2010). The second half of the final chapter, “Crossing Borders in Girls' Secondary Education” (with Rebecca Rogers), which discusses international women’s organizations, owed its genesis to the annual reports of the IFUW held in the Sybil Campbell Library.

Joyce Goodman, “Cosmopolitan women educators, 1920-1939: inside/outside activism and abjection” Paedagogica Historica, vol,46, issue 1&2 (2010), pp.68-83 draws on the IFUW records held in the Sybil Campbell Library to discuss Amelia Arato’s study of girls’ secondary education commissioned by the IFUW in the interwar period, and accounts from Federations of University Women from Czecho-Slovakia, Italy and Belgium.

Joyce Goodman, “Social Change and Secondary Schooling for Girls in the 'Long 1920s': * European Engagements”, History of Education, Volume 36, Issue 4&5  (2007) , pages 497 – 513, uses accounts  of the Secondary Education Committee of the IFUW published in the IFUW Reports held in the Sybil Campbell Library.
